Tim Tebow stresses need for Alabama to make Carson Beck uncomfortable

Tim Tebow knows firsthand what makes a quarterback uncomfortable. On Friday, the Florida legend revealed how Alabama’s defense can cause issues for Georgia QB Carson Beck.

“The No. 1 key for Alabama’s defense is find a way, whatever it is, to make Carson Beck uncomfortable,” Tebow said. “I don’t really believe that he’s been uncomfortable all year. Even when he’s been behind against South Carolina, when he was behind against Auburn… It didn’t even bother him.

“You got to somewhat fluster a quarterback and that doesn’t mean you’re gonna get him, get sacks or turnovers. It just means you got to either get pressure, you got to be able to cover or down receivers.”

Georgia has mostly sheltered Beck from pressure this season. The Bulldogs’ front five have only allowed 10 sacks this season, tied for sixth-least in the country. However, Beck has performed even when inches away from 300-pound defensive linemen.

In Georgia’s 30-21 win over Missouri, Beck suffered three sacks, the most in one game this season. Yet, the junior QB still completed 21-of-his-32 (65.6%) pass attempts for 254 yards and two touchdowns while throwing zero interceptions.

Alabama looks to turn up the heat

In fairness, Alabama will bring an unprecedented level of pressure. The Crimson Tide boast 36 sacks this season, ranking No. 9 in the nation. For reference, Missouri trails three spots behind them at No. 12. Whether or not Alabama’s defense will throw Beck off his game, Tebow believes the Crimson Tide have to try.

“He’s played at such a high level because he’s been comfortable,” Tebow said. “He’s known what the defense is doing, he knows where he’s going and he knows he has the arm to be able to make it happen. He’s just played so well and at such a high level, and I think somehow you got to get him uncomfortable.”

It won’t be easy. Beck has tallied 3,495 passing yards and 22 touchdowns this season while only tossing six turnovers. The first-year starter expected nothing less from himself.

“No surprise. I had super high expectations for myself,” Beck said after Georgia defeated Tennessee 38-10 in Week 11. “I put a very high expectation on myself to execute at a high level. I don’t care about the numbers really, but to be able to execute at a high level, I expect that from myself.

“They’re only going to continue to get higher,” he added. “I try to get better each and every day. That’s kind of where I’m at.”

Alabama will look to ground Beck’s lofty expectations this weekend. On Saturday, Alabama and Georgia will face off in the SEC Championship at 4 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on CBS.
