Nick Saban reveals how Tommy Rees, Alabama's offense has improved over the season
Alabama caught a lot of heat for their offensive performances early in the season. A lot was made about the quarterback situation but Tommy Rees was the one calling the operation. When a change was made against USF with Tyler Buchner and Ty Simpson, the game was a pure disaster no matter what they called.
Since then, Jalen Milroe has gotten back onto the field and has really exploded. Nick Saban is happy with the development Alabama has made on offense, specifically talking about Rees during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference.
“I think the chemistry between Tommy and the players has always been good,” Saban said. “I think we’ve gradually improved in terms of how we technically execute things — which is the key to the drill. I think we’ve also figured out how to use the personnel we have a little bit better. I think that’s contributed to us making more positive plays. In turn, the confidence grows and that’s a good thing.”
Rees calling plays to fit Alabama’s personnel has really been the thing that stands out. Really, beginning against LSU, you saw quarterback-designed runs for Milroe being executed perfectly. Not only does it fit what Milroe does well but heading into the season, a huge deal was made about how the offensive line was big and ready to impose their will in the run game.
In the last two games against LSU and Kentucky — Milroe has 191 rushing yards on 28 carries, averaging 6.8 yards per carry. Most impressively, seven touchdowns have been put on the board, proving his legs can be the reason Alabama wins big games down the stretch.

Saban mentioned how confidence grows when the positive plays begin to stack up. You can certainly feel Milroe being more confident out there on a weekly basis. Even when getting dinged up against Kentucky, he was able to execute at a high level.
Rees will have a difficult challenge ahead of him, with a few tough games remaining on the schedule. Going to Auburn and winning the Iron Bowl will be the final regular season hurdle before heading to Atlanta to face off against Georiga in the SEC Championship game.
If Alabama is going to win out and have a chance at the College Football Playoff, the offensive improvements will need to continue. With their defense playing at an elite level, playing complimentary football makes the Crimson Tide as scary as any team in the country.
