Ty Simpson's consistency standing out to Kalen DeBoer
New Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer was lucky enough to inherit a very talented roster. That includes a deep quarterback room, with starter Jalen Milroe returning as well as several different potential backups, like Ty Simpson.
Following the Alabama A-Day spring game, DeBoer praised Simpson for his consistency and made it clear that he’s confident in the young quarterback.
“You saw he does a great job back there,” Kalen DeBoer said. “You’ve got full confidence with a lot of those guys back there. But Ty, I thought he’s just been consistent and gotten better throughout the spring. Never really had any drops in each and every practice.”
Ty Simpson came to Alabama as a five-star recruit in the Class of 2022, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He was the second-ranked quarterback and the 25th-ranked player overall in that cycle.
In his freshman season at Alabama, Simpson played in four games, preserving his redshirt. He then went on to play in six games during the 2023 season. During that limited time, he’s completed 60 percent of his passes for 214 yards.
“So, you see what he does out there. He’s accurate, he knows when to put touch on it. You saw the one ball on the deep crosser, he’s got good awareness. I thought all the quarterbacks did a better job of pushing the pocket at the right times,” DeBoer said.

“That’s something I know we’ve been emphasizing, rather than just sitting back there and let the rush on edges get to you. He had a good feel on all those plays. I think he’s got a command of the offense, for sure.”
For now, Ty Simpson is presumed to be the backup to Jalen Milroe.
Why Alabama’s quarterback room is in ‘much better shape’ than 2023
Beyond Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson, there is plenty of depth in the Alabama quarterback room. Because of that, BamaOnLine’s Tim Watts thinks the quarterback room is in better shape than it was last year.
“I thought he looked okay. A couple of drops hurt his stats. He was three-for-nine, completed a couple of really nice passes. The one thing about him is you have to worry about the decision making. That’s the question. He got the ball out quick when he got it out. But when he hesitated he didn’t find his first guy. He got you know, touched for a sack. And also I should note that like, when you’re Jalen Milroe, you’re not used to playing tag football. Nobody’s touching you and bringing you down. It’s hard enough to grab you and bring you down,” Watts said.
“So I think mentally he knew he had that escape ability. And even though it was touch, he’s you know, he does what he does with his legs with a nice run. So I think he looked fine Simpsons going against the twos, I thought he had some moments. We all think you know, Ty Simpson has the talent as well. I think overall the quarterback room, if you compare it to last year, didn’t really know a lot about last year’s team right? The quarterback room is in much better shape. I still think Jalen is your starter until proven otherwise.”
