Tyler Booker addresses his mindset towards facing other teams during spring game
The topic of spring games and calls for a system where teams are allowed to play against other teams have come up quite a bit this year, with voices in the profession from Hugh Freeze, to Lane Kiffin, to Shane Beamer chiming in.
But at least one player says he wants no part of such an arrangement.
“It’s interesting as a player. I saw that come about, but I think at the end of the day, me being in my situation, I feel like this is the best competition I’ll face all year,” Alabama offensive lineman Tyler Booker said.
One of the original proponents of teams playing against other teams this spring was Auburn‘s Hugh Freeze.
Freeze threw out the hypothetical of Alabama and Auburn playing against the likes of in-state opponents like Troy or UAB. There are plenty of logistics that would have to get sorted out in such a move, like potential payouts for the lesser teams and where the games would be played.
But at least some feel like it could juice up the sport a bit during the sometimes dull offseason. It could also give coaches a more realistic idea where their teams stand.
Tyler Booker doesn’t see the need at Alabama.
“This month, I’m going to be so much better for it because I feel like we have the best players in the nation on both sides of the ball,” he said. “In my situation I’d much rather have that A-Day game, because I know that I’m not going to get challenged any more than I will this Saturday.”
Alabama is one of a handful of teams that has yet to wrap up spring ball. The Crimson Tide will host their annual A-Day Game at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Alabama’s quarterback battle set to take shape
With Tyler Booker’s comments in mind, one of the most interesting aspects of Alabama’s spring game on Saturday will be the quarterback competition, which remains ongoing between Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson.
Both have battled this spring and fans will get to see how they look in the stadium before they head into the long offseason.
On3’s Jesse Simonton writes, in previewing Alabama as one of the 10 most intriguing spring games this weekend:
“At Alabama, all eyes are on the quarterback battle between Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson. While Nick Saban is not expected to name a starter after A-Day, the most encouraging news this spring for the Tide has been their head coach’s confidence that the team is much improved at receiver, tailback and offensive line.
“Newcomers like 5-star freshman tailback Justice Haynes and 5-star JUCO wideout Malik Benson — two guys who have generated all sorts of buzz out of Tuscaloosa this spring — will get to showcase their skills for the first time in Bryant-Denny Stadium.”
