Tyler Steen reveals what it's like blocking for dynamic RB Jahmyr Gibbs

Talented former Georgia Tech running back Jahmyr Gibbs had no trouble fitting in around all the talent at Alabama. The short-statured yet electric playmaker out of the backfield only thrived with the increase in competition. He’s hitting the holes his offensive line provides for him while making something out of nothing if they don’t.

Another Crimson Tide transfer, Tyler Steen, an offensive lineman out of Vanderbilt, has been thoroughly impressed with Gibbs’ ability as a back.

“Yeah, I mean Jahmyr is a great player. I mean, you know, when you get the block for somebody like that, it just kind of makes the offensive line’s job easier,” Tyler Steen said of Gibbs. “He really sets you up, as far as you’re blocking and stuff like that. So, you know, we try to help him and put him in good positions. He’s putting us in good position as well to do our job and succeed. So, you know, I really think that continuity and just continuing to learn offense and continue to improve as an o-line, I feel like that’s gone a long way in helping us do that.”

So long as Gibbs keeps having his road paved for him by the big fellas up front and explodes through those holes when they’re there, both he and the offensive line are in perfect balance. Steen respects the guys running behind his blocks and knows Gibbs will make him look good if he keeps moving guys around in the run game.

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel also understands what a challenge Gibbs provides

“Yeah, I think he’s got really good pace, vision. Delivers blocks really well. Slow to go early. But once he hits the hole he’s got an explosive nature about him. He’s got the ability to to make you miss in open space. Can take it the distance. He’s a really good back. He’s explosive. So you know that they’re gonna try to find ways to get the ball in his hands,” Josh Heupel said.

With Bryce Young a bit banged up lately and possibly returning after missing a couple games with an injury, perhaps the Tide opt to stuff the ball in Jahmyr Gibbs’ stomach and let him go to work on the ground.
