Urban Meyer discusses Alabama adding third quarterback to competition after spring
Alabama has a brand new offensive coordinator along with a new starting quarterback, although they’re not certain yet who that person will be. Neither does Urban Meyer. However, the college coaching icon is certain the Crimson Tide know who their lead dog in the race is, even if they won’t reveal anything about the competition to the public. Of course, the recent addition of Notre Dame QB Tyler Buchner only complicated the race, giving Nick Saban yet another talented arm to test against his other passers.
But Meyer isn’t necessarily concerned about which of the three win the job, but rather, whether Alabama is going to have the necessary surrounding pieces on offense to win a title, which he believes ‘Bama fell short on during Bryce Young’s two years under center, neither of which resulted in a championship.
So check out Urban Meyer’s full conversation about the Alabama QB situation that he had on the On3 Youtube Channel. He discussed what the Tide need to do to get back on top and explained why the players’ relationship with the QB coach will be a huge factor in the quarterback race. Urban Meyer on Alabama quarterbacks
“Well, when the quarterback transferred from Notre Dame, I would love to be with Tommy Rees as the offense coordinator, and you’d love to be a fly on the wall to actually hear what was said to him, why did he pick there, why did he go there. And the one thing about Alabama, when we all witnessed Alabama put it on Ohio State in the national championship game, you had first round receivers all over that field.
“I didn’t see that last year. I kept I kept hearing about the young talent, of course he’s got great talent at Alabama. But, you know, Bryce Young’s the the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, but you didn’t feel that same vertical push, you didn’t see that. I mean, Alabama, when they had those wideouts, they were unbeatable.

“Because you had a great run game, all you had to do is flip the bubble screens out there and get the ball in those guys hands and they were out. So I think Alabama…it’s going to be really interesting to watch them in training camp, not only the quarterback, but can they get anywhere close to the skill positions they had a couple years ago?”
Meyer touts importance of position coaches
“I’ve always had a belief that you put the pressure on the position coach. You know, it’s…deep down, I think — I know, I mean — the coordinator and the head coach have a good idea of how the quarterback’s going to be, yeah, if they’re up close. They’re just not going to say that to the media because they don’t want to offend anyone.
“But in their mind, right now, they know who’s going to take the first snap if everything goes as planned. Unless something changes — injury, someone beat someone out. But I always believed that I put pressure on position coaches and it’s ultimately their job. Because the amount of time you spend with that quarterback getting ready is going to be critical.
“And you’re allowed to do things now that you were not allowed to do in the past. They’re going to meet a lot this summer, they’re going to do a lot of the practices, you know, where you’re obviously not practicing but you’re getting ready for the season. So a lot of time spent.”
