WATCH: Alabama freshman JD Davison throws down one-handed dunk
The Alabama Crimson Tide are usually known for the highlight plays on the football field. But on Friday, fans got to enjoy this nugget from freshman point guard JD Davison. At the Alabama basketball showcase to kick off the season, players partook in a slam dunk competition. On one of his attempts, the freshman delivered this baseline gem.
A member of the 2021 recruiting class, Davison is a five-star recruit that the Crimson Tide picked up. In his class, he is a top-10 player and the highest-rated point guard. The 6-foot-3 point guard is a native of Alabama from Letohatchee and played at Calhoun High School.
Alabama looking to dance again
For the Alabama Crimson Tide, they’re looking to pick up where they left off last year. Last year’s team was crowned SEC Tournament champions after defeating LSU 80-79 in the championship game. In the Eastern Region of the NCAA tournament, they made it all the way to the Eastern Sweet Sixteen; beating Iona and Maryland on their way. Unfortunately, in the Sweet Sixteen round, they fell short to the No. 11 seed UCLA, 88-78, in overtime.

To cap off the season, Alabama saw two players from its Sweet Sixteen selected in the 2021 draft. Guard Josh Primo was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs with the 12th pick overall. Primo is the youngest player selected in that draft at 18 years old. And he’s the youngest player to taken in the draft after completing just one year of college in NBA history. Alabama also saw forward Herbert Jones find his way to the New Orleans Pelicans with the 35th pick.
If Alabama is going to make it back to the NCAA tournament and go further than the Sweet Sixteen this year, it will need the help up their super freshman JD Davison. And if Davison can continue to make highlight plays like that while they’re winning, he could help turn Tuscaloosa from a football town into a basketball one.
