Sophomore quarterback Bryce Young led Alabama to a touchdown on the opening drive of Saturday’s game against Miami, finding John Metchie III on a broken play. Alabama’s first touchdown of the season comes on just the seventh play from scrimmage, going 37 yards to the endzone.

On first and 10, the Miami defensive line jumped offside to the left. It did not matter as left tackle Evan Neal picked up the block and Young was able to scramble out of the pocket to find Metchie III wide open on the right side of the field. Metchie III high-stepped toward a defender and lunged past him to set the ball in the endzone.

Young spent 2020 as the backup to first-round pick Mac Jones after joining Alabama as a five-star recruit.

High praise from the national media

Fox Big Noon Kickoff analyst Brady Quinn picked Alabama quarterback Bryce Young to win the Heisman Saturday morning, citing the perfect storm surrounding the first-year starter. Despite never starting a college football game, Young has become a popular sleeper pick to win the award as the lead man on the No. 1 ranked team.

“For me it’s all about the quarterback,” said Quinn. “This young man is special. Bryce Young, I’m saying it right now, he’s going to win the Heisman Trophy this year.”

He continued: “He very well could end up winning two. He’s got the talent around him, he’s got the coaching staff to play that role. But he reminds me of Russell Wilson, not quite the same build but the ability to maneuver the pocket and extend plays, the accuracy. I’m telling you, this kid has it all and he’s in a perfect position to excel.”

Bryce Young on first start

Sophomore quarterback Bryce Young took the first snap for Alabama in his second season with the team and led a touchdown drive. The new starter is excited to start forming his legacy.

“Everyone is obviously really excited to get the season started. You go through a long offseason of going against each other, and it’s great to finally be able to play other people and start to game plan and prepare,” Young said Monday. “So, it’s super exciting overall — me individually, and us as a team — just for us to start the season and try to put it together; start game planning, start working towards an opponent, we’re all excited about it.”
