Cam Skattebo declares himself the best running back in America
Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo put on another show in the Big 12 Championship, struck the Heisman pose and declared himself the best running back in the country.
With all of the attention on Ashton Jeanty, in terms of running backs, and Travis Hunter in the Heisman picture, Skattebo made his case. In any other year, he might be the winner.
It’ll be tough this year, but he certainly made an argument and big impression in one of the best games of his career.
“I’ve been disrespected my whole life,” Skattebo said postgame. “I’ve always been the underdog, and nobody respects the fact that I’m the best running back in the country, and I’m going to stand on that. And if people want to disrespect that, I’m going to keep going, and I’m going to keep proving people wrong, and whatever NFL team takes me is going to get a gem. I’m going to give it everything I got for them. And no matter winning the Heisman or losing the Heisman, I should still be in that situation.”
Skattebo finished the 45-19 win over Iowa State with 16 carries for 170 yards, two touchdowns, two catches, 38 receiving yards and one touchdown reception.

Going into the College Football Playoff, Skattebo has 263 carries for 1,568 yards, 19 touchdowns, six yards per carry, 37 catches, 506 receiving yards and three touchdown receptions.
As a member of the Class of 2020, Skattebo was not ranked, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He played his HS Football out at Rio Linda (Calif.) High.
“Man, he’s just toughness, man,” ASU head coach Kenny Dillingham said. “Dude is tough as nails. The dude plays the game with so much passion, plays so hard. His care level is so high, so competitive, the work that he put in this off season, he should 100% be getting some Heisman love. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that.
“I mean, I don’t know the stats right now, but I would think in yards per scrimmage, he has to be top three in the country. Skill players in power five football, power four football, he has to be top three and that’s testament to him, his work ethic this team … This dude’s putting so much work this offseason, you know, he deserves some some recognition.”
