Kenny Dillingham makes Heisman Trophy case for Cam Skattebo
With what Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo has done this season, Kenny Dillingham wants to see him in New York City.
After his latest outing as Most Outstanding Player in a win in the Big 12 Championship on Saturday, Dillingham said Skattebo is deserving to be a candidate for The Heisman Trophy.
“I do think he should be (in New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony),” said Dillingham postgame.
As for why he should be up for the sport’s biggest award, Dillingham told everyone to just watch the film on Skattebo and see the numbers that he’s been running up for the Sun Devils.
“I mean, turn on the tape,” Dillingham said. I mean, he’s really good. Like, he’s good enough to be there.”
“I don’t know what final, what he finished up with today…He basically had 200 yards of total offense and three touchdowns. I mean, that’s incredible. I think that’s his third time in a row that he’s gone for over 100 yards and multiple touchdowns in a first half, potentially,” said Dillingham. “I mean, I don’t know what else, what else you can do to put your name in the race.”

During his senior season in Tempe, Skattebo has put up 1,568 rushing yards, which is second all-time in a single season in school history, and 19 touchdowns, which ties a program record, on 263 carries, which averages out to 130.7 rush yards a game at six per carry. He then has 37 catches for 506 yards and three more scores, which ties another school record for total touchdowns. Add that all up and he’s posting 172.9 yards of offense on average by himself.
This includes his game during the conference championship against Iowa State in Arlington. Skattebo rushed 16 times for 170 yards, good for 10.6 per carry, for a pair of touchdowns while also catching two passes, one being another score, for 38 yards. The trio of touchdowns tied the record for the conference’s title game.
At this point, it’ll be almost impossible to win the award over Colorado’s Travis Hunter or Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty. However, Dillingham doesn’t see why Skattebo wouldn’t be a finalist come Saturday in NYC.
“Obviously, there’s two other guys that are really, really high on that list. I don’t know if he should ever surpass those guys. But should he be on that list, should he have the opportunity to go there? Yes.”
