Arizona State senior BJ Freeman is no longer with the program, per The Arizona Republic. Freeman finishes his time with the Sun Devils this season averaging 13.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game while shooting 42.1% from the field and 35.6% from beyond the arc.

Freeman transferred from Milwaukee to Arizona State ahead of this season. Arizona State head coach Bobby Hurley suspended Freeman from playing against Oklahoma State on Feb. 9, after the veteran guard committed “conduct detrimental to the team.”

BJ Freeman was ejected from two games this season. The worst incident was when Freeman was assessed a Flagrant 2 and ejected after head butting Arizona‘s Caleb Love late in Arizona State’s loss to the Wildcats on Feb. 1.

Bobby Hurley didn’t have his team participate in the traditional postgame handshake line and instead sent them straight to the locker room after the game. At the time, Hurley seemingly defended Freeman’s actions.

“If you were right near our bench, it was relentless, constant chatter from a couple of the Arizona players that was not being policed properly,” Hurley said. “Of course, they’re going to be happy with winning. But it was done with no class, in my opinion.

“Words that were said back-and-forth led to the moment where Freeman lost it and lost his cool because of the constant talk that was allowed to go on. I had to make a tough decision, in the best interest of our team, to get them into the locker room so there’d be no further incidents the rest of the game.”

Now, Arizona State must find a way to win without its leading scorer. It won’t be an easy task. The Sun Devils are on a six-game losing streak and are just 3-12 in conference play.

The losing streak has been grueling on the Sun Devils. After Arizona State’s 80-65 loss to Houston on Saturday, Hurley was brutally honest about the state of the Sun Devils’ locker room.

“My players didn’t even want me to talk to them after the game. ‘What do you want me to say at this point?’ is some of the comments I got from my own players,” Hurley said.

On Sunday, the Sun Devils will have a chance to redeem themselves as they square off against Kansas State at 4 p.m. ET without BJ Freeman. The game will air live on ESPN+.
