Arizona fires Dave Heeke, reportedly expecting negative audit on athletic department
The University of Arizona has fired vice president and athletic director David Heeke, the school announced. Former Wildcats softball coach Mike Candrea will come on board as interim AD.
An audit on the Arizona Athletic Department is expected be release in the coming days with some not-so-good results, among “other issues,” according to Wildcat Authority’s Jason Scheer on X.
“I want to thank Dave for his outstanding efforts in leading our athletics program through a period of significant change,” said Arizona President Robert C. Robbins, via press release. “He helped get our men’s and women’s basketball programs and our football program on a strong trajectory, oversaw the success of several of our sports teams and greatly enhanced the student-athlete experience.
“Dave always displayed the highest integrity, and I am appreciative of his partnership and dedication. On behalf of all Wildcats, I wish Dave and Liz and their family all the best in the years to come.”
Heeke’s last day as AD will come on Feb. 2, concluding a seven-year tenure with the Wildcats athletic department. He arrived in Tucson in 2017 after holding the same role at Central Michigan.
In his seven years with Arizona, dozens of teams throughout the athletic department won Pac-12 Championships and oversaw several coaches that went on to be named Coach of the Year in their respective sport. He also is a member of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee.
“It has been my honor and privilege to have served the University of Arizona for the last seven years. Tucson and the entire Wildcat Nation are amazing communities that Liz and I have embraced with our hearts,” said Heeke, via the same release. “I want to thank President Robbins, our talented coaches, devoted staff, and loyal supporters for their partnership on this journey.

Now, Candrea, the winningest coach in the history of college softball, steps in to serve while Arizona looks for its new AD. He stepped down from coaching in 2021 after leading Arizona to eight softball national championships over his illustrious 35-year coaching career.
“Every Wildcat knows the history of Mike Candrea and what he means to our university and community, and I am grateful for Mike’s willingness to step into the interim role,” Robbins continued. “I am confident Mike and Dave will ensure a smooth transition as we immediately begin a national search for a new Director of Athletics.
“With our transition to the Big XII, success in our high-profile programs, a passionate fan base, and institutional alignment, I am confident that we will be able to attract a tremendous new leader of our athletics program.”
