Arkansas wide receiver Andrew Armstrong took to social media to respond after his brother died following a police-involved shooting. The incident took place Friday in DeSoto, Texas.

Armstrong accused the DeSoto Police Department of foul play in the shooting. He said officers shot his brother at close range using an AR15, and did so in front of their mother.

“Yall did my brother like that knowing he had mental health issues he is in yall system as one and yall came to my granny house and shot him close range with an AR15 IN FRONT OF OUR MOMMA,” Armstrong wrote, along with a broken heart emoji.

According to the DeSoto Police Department, officers were dispatched after a 9-1-1 hangup. After re-establishing connection, the caller identified himself as Arthur Armstrong Jr., who said he had “several” weapons and threatened to harm officers. Police then responded after a second caller confirmed Armstrong was at the residence and armed with a knife.

DPD said officers came into contact with Armstrong win the front yard, and he had a knife in each hand. The press release said he approached the officers “aggressively” and didn’t stop or drop the weapons after being told to do so. He got closer to the officers, and an officer fired one round from a rifle, which hit Armstrong in the chest.

The officers then performed lifesaving measures before he was transported to the hospital. Upon arrival, he was pronounced dead.

The incident remains under investigation by the Grand Prairie Police Department’s investigative services bureau, which also responded to the scene. A press conference is scheduled for Dec. 16 in which DPD will provide more information on the situation, and the officer who discharged his rifle is now on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

Andrew Armstrong put together a strong regular season at Arkansas as the Razorbacks’ leading receiver. In 12 appearances, he totaled 78 receptions for 1,140 yards – leading the SEC in both categories – while adding one receiving touchdown.

Armstrong is a Dallas-area native. He played high school football at Bishop Dunne before signing with Arkansas in 2023.
