As Arkansas readies for its NCAA Tournament opener against Illinois an injury is once again under scrutiny, particularly one to point guard Anthony Black.

Black was shaken up in the late stages of the SEC Tournament and has had his foot in a protective boot since.

“Yeah, I’m feeling good, it’s good,” Black said, dispelling any concerns about his availability going forward.

His injury initially occurred in a loss to Texas A&M when Black came down on another player’s foot while attempting to secure a rebound. His foot rolled awkwardly and put him in a bad spot.

It’s just the latest in a long line of injuries at Arkansas, injuries that have plagued the team since the season began.

On top of Black’s injury, the Hogs lost big man Trevon Brazile for the season due to a knee injury. Meanwhile, star guard Nick Smith was held out of most of the first two-thirds of the season with an injury.

But if there’s a silver lining it’s that those injuries, even the Anthony Black injury, have forced Arkansas to adapt and find ways to win games anyway.

“You add in the injuries, really proud of what our guys have, how they’ve stuck together,” coach Eric Musselman said. “The games that we have lost, lot of close games. There has not been many games where we’ve been out of games. Over the course of 30 games every team in the country almost has one or two games where you don’t play very well and there’s double-digit margins. We had a few this year as well, but for the most part you look at the 30-game body of work, we were in every single game we played almost.”

Black and his 12.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.0 steals per game should be on hand for the team’s NCAA Tournament opener.

And if Arkansas can survive the game with Illinois, an even tougher matchup, likely against No. 1 seed Kansas, will loom.

Arkansas will continue its 2023 campaign on Thursday when it takes on Illinois in a game that tips off at 4:30 p.m. ET on TBS.
