Arkansas TE Var'Keyes Gumms plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal

Former Arkansas tight end Var’Keyes Gumms confirmed to On3’s Pete Nakos that he plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Gumms was dismissed from the Arkansas team back in October. He had one reception for 0 yards this season.

Prior to transferring to Arkansas, Var’Keyes Gumms had an excellent season at North Texas in 2022. He caught 34 passes for 458 yards and five touchdowns that season.

Gumms was a three-star recruit in the class of 2021, per the On3 Industry rankings. He transferred to Arkansas ahead of the 2023 season and caught three passes for 26 yards that year.

Back in October, Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman announced that Gumms was no longer on the Razorbacks team. He made the announcement about Gumms and fellow Arkansas tight end Tyrus Washington at the same time.

“They’re not on the team. There was no suspension,” said Pittman. “They’re gone.”

“Yeah, they’re not on the team,” Pittman clarified. “Tyrus Washington and (Var’keyes) Gumms, yeah.”

Washington was in his third season at Arkansas. He had appeared in 21 games in that time with some of those being starts. He totaled 14 catches in those outings for 212 yards and four touchdowns, including two this season for a score and a total of 25 yards.

Arkansas is currently 5-5 on the season with two games remaining. The Razorbacks have a chance to become bowl-eligible with a win over Louisiana Tech this weekend. Kickoff for this weekend’s game is scheduled for 4 p.m.

As for the season finale, the Razorbacks will take on Missouri. They will face the rival Tigers on Nov. 30 in Columbia. Kickoff for that SEC game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. It will be televised by the SEC Network.
