Eric Musselman shares story highlighting freshman Barry Dunning's work ethic
Arkansas basketball brought in two five-star prospects as well as two four-stars in its 2022 recruiting class, but it’s a three-star who’s caught the attention of coach Eric Musselman. Barry Dunning might not have the accolades of some of the other incoming freshmen, but he is setting out to prove himself early on through hard work.
Musselman is taking notice, and shared a story in a Monday press conference of how Dunning has separated himself from the crowd with his work ethic.
“Before I left for Dallas — and I was lucky enough to be able to get over there in a quick manner — Barry was shooting,” Musselman said. “Sunday, I walked in to print my articles on MLB managers and leadership and trying to learn. When I went to go print, I heard a ball bouncing. It was Barry. So as much as we all want to support our athletic programs when they’re playing, Barry’s in here working. I only use this example because he’s not going home. He’s not hanging out. He’s in the gym.”

Although Barry Dunning doesn’t come in with five-star status, he was still a highly sought-after recruit. He ranked as the No. 1 player from the state of Alabama and No. 135 overall prospect according to On3 Consensus. He chose the Razorbacks over offers from Alabama, Auburn, Memphis and others.

Musselman isn’t sure exactly how much Dunning will contribute this season, but there is plenty of opportunity on an Arkansas team the lost all five of its regular starters from 2021-22. In addition to signing six freshman, the Razorbacks also added five players through the transfer portal.
That means the competition for playing time will be stiff, but Dunning has already gotten off on the right foot in his coach’s eyes.
“He’s grown as much as anybody in this program,” Musselman said. “Where that leads role-wise (I don’t know). But from a culture standpoint, he’s at the top of the list. Coming in in the morning, he doesn’t come in at 10 in the morning. He’s in here at 7. So his will to do the right thing, his will and his focus to get better, probably can’t have any more focus and desire. Then following through with thoughts about how to get better. He’s been awesome.”
