Arkansas right-handed pitcher Gage Wood underwent an MRI on Monday and the results have left head coach Dave Van Horn feeling optimistic about the junior’s status moving forward.

Wood left his Sunday start against Michigan after throwing a warmup pitch prior to the third inning. The Razorbacks starter has a shoulder “impingement” that “may take a few weeks” to get right, Van Horn said Tuesday on his pregame radio show.

The longtime head coach labeled it “great news” for Wood, who struck out six Wolverines in two innings of work before exiting Sunday’s 8-6 Arkansas win at Globe Life Field in Arlington.

It was Wood’s second start of the season, as he dealt five innings of two-hit, two-run ball in a 5-2 win over Washington State on Feb. 15 in his first appearance. He was off to a hot start on Sunday before signaling for the Hogs’ training staff following a warmup pitch, resulting in him leaving the game.

The National Health Service defines a shoulder impingement as when “a tendon inside your shoulder swells and rubs against tissue or bone, causing pain as you lift your arm. It can be caused by irritation, injury or ‘wear and tear.'”

“We tell our pitchers to be really cautious and if there’s any issue at all, don’t try to tough it out,” Van Horn said to FloCollege on Sunday as Wood was being checked out by trainers. “Let’s just get it evaluated and go from there.”

Wood is in his third season in Fayetteville. He made 45 appearances across his freshman and sophomore campaigns, but made just three starts coming into 2025. He tallied 40-and-a-third innings of work across 22 appearances in 2024, managing a 4.46 ERA, striking out 56 while walking just eight.

In seven innings so far this season, Wood has fanned 13 batters and walked just one, allowing four hits and two earned runs.

Arkansas takes on Grambling State on Tuesday afternoon and will host Charlotte for a three-game series this weekend in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks are 6-1 early on this season and moved up one spot to No. 4 in this week’s D1Baseball Top 25.
