In one of the all-time performances at the College World Series, Arkansas pitcher Gage Wood threw a complete game no-hitter in a 3-0 win over Murray State. He was unconscious.

The right-handed pitcher started things off with a bang and never looked back. He simply mowed down the Racers inning after inning on Monday afternoon.

Wood had a perfect game going through the first seven innings, and it would have been the first in College World Series history. Alas, Gage Wood hit a batter after he lost a breaking ball in the eighth inning, spoiling the perfect game.

Still, there had only been two no-hitters in the event’s history before Monday. There hadn’t been one in 65 years. So suffice it to say what happened was a huge deal.

The junior out of Arkansas struck out 19 in his perfect game bid, thoroughly confounding the Murray State lineup. Then he got some help with some excellent fielding in a few spots on some hard-hit balls.

That was all she wrote for Murray State, which heads home after losing the elimination game. Arkansas will live to see another day, knowing it has done something exceedingly rare in the sport.

There was some question as to whether Gage Wood would get the chance to finish out his perfect game bid. He was at 90 pitches through the first seven frames, starting to get up there in pitch count.

However, teammates gave him space in the dugout. And even an earlier blister on his foot couldn’t sour the mood.

Manager Dave Van Horn felt good about sticking with him, and Gage Wood made it pay. Outside of the hit by pitch, he was clean through the eighth and ninth frames, polishing off the no-hitter.

With the win, Arkansas will move on and face either LSU or UCLA. It will be another elimination game, with the Hogs needing to win that to advance to the bracket final against the winner.
