Jaylin Williams reacts to Arkansas hiring John Calipari

The college basketball landscape turned upside down on Sunday night after reports surfaced that Arkansas would be hiring John Calipari as their next head basketball coach after spending the past 15 seasons at Kentucky.

Everyone knew that the Razorbacks were in search of a new head man after Eric Musselman was named the new head coach of USC on Thursday. But not many expected that one of the most iconic figures in college basketball would be his replacement, as John Calipari will now remain in the SEC and take center stage in Fayetteville.

But one notable Razorback may have seen this coming. With former Arkansas player Jaylin Williams reacting to the groundbreaking news while also giving props to Razorbacks’ athletic director Hunter Yurachek for the impressive hire in a retweet that can be seen below.

Williams spent his two seasons at the college level playing under Musselman at Arkansas. But now that he’s departed for Los Angeles, the second-year forward for the Oklahoma City Thunder seems pretty thrilled about the Razorbacks’ next head coach.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel broke the news on Sunday night revealing that Calipari is expected to sign a five-year deal with Arkansas. Particularly surprising news following what seemed like a constructive meeting between Calipari and Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart in March.

Calipari’s first decade with the Wildcats was a massive success, highlighted by two national championship appearances (one victory), four Final Four appearances, seven total Elite Eight, and a slew of players taking talents to the NBA and thriving.

And while Calipari has continued to recruit and produce NBA talent at a high level, Kentucky has not had the postseason success to go along with it. Failing to make it past the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament in the last five years, most recently falling in upset fashion to Oakland in the first round of March Madness.

Barnhart and Calipari spoke about evolving and adapting to the new NIL and transfer portal landscape in order to re-achieve their previous success in Lexington. But now it seems like Calipari will look to take a new program to the next level heading into the 2024 season.
