John Calipari heaps praise on Gage Wood after no-hitter: 'Incredible outing'

Arkansas pitcher Gage Wood became just the third player in history to throw a no-hitter at the College World Series. He did so on Monday in an elimination game win over Murray State.

The junior right-hander was locked in from the start. He made it through the first seven innings with a perfect game before he ultimately plunked a batter to allow his first and only base-runner of the afternoon.

Following the 3-0 win, everyone was raving about his outing. Including basketball coach John Calipari.

“What a great win for our baseball team today!” Calipari wrote on Twitter. “Wish I could’ve been there. Only the third no hitter in Men’s College World Series history, incredible outing by Gage Wood. 19 strikeouts!”

The win helped Arkansas to survive for another day. Now the Razorbacks will await the loser of LSU and UCLA in another elimination game, needing to win to set up a showdown with the other team for a trip to the championship series.

But at least Calipari believes in the team’s ability to fight out of the loser’s bracket after what he’s seen this year. He weighed in on that.

“Now it is there for the taking!” Calipari wrote. “I have been watching all season and what a fun team to follow. Go do it men! Keep having fun and get another W, we will be watching!”

The game against LSU or UCLA will take place on Tuesday night at 7 ET. If the Hogs get another special outing like they did from Gage Wood they’ll be cooking.

Gage Wood tosses a no-hitter

Gage Wood finished with 19 strikeouts in his no-hitter, coming up just short of a perfect game. He hit one batter in the eighth inning, his lone blemish in the contest.

But he was electric otherwise. He threw 119 total pitches in the contest and 83 of them went for strikes.

Still, he was ruing the one that got away after the game. That’s exactly what you’d expect from a fierce competitor.

“I shouldn’t have hit the guy,” Wood said in a postgame interview on the field. “That’s it, that’s all I’ve got to say.”
