Kendal Briles jokes about Arkansas receiver Matt Landers’ speed
While speaking at a recent press appearance, Arkansas offensive coordinator Kendal Briles praised transfer receiver Matt Landers‘ speed. Landers transferred into the Arkansas program after two years with Georgia and one with Toledo, bringing his “deceptive” speed to the Razorbacks as Briles explains it.
Kendal Briles on Matt Landers
As he took questions about the Arkansas offense this season, Briles was asked about the growing reputation Landers has for being super fast on the field. Briles proceeded to break down what makes Landers special as a transfer player, and laughed about testing Landers’ speed himself.
“I tried to catch him the other day, it didn’t work,” joked Briles. “He can run. And he’s kind of a guy that scoots. There’s guys that are really pretty runners, where they get their knees high and run like a track athlete. He’s really not that. Very deceptive speed, we’ve underthrown him quite a bit just because of — you don’t think that he’s moving as fast as he is.

“He had a drop today, but he’s had really strong hands and his work ethic … really his mental state I’ve been incredibly impressed with. The fact that he’s come in here, you know, as a summer guy. He didn’t get here in January and go through spring so he’s had to learn it quick. And I’m really, really proud of how he’s been and bought into what we’re trying to do and he’s extremely competitive. He thinks he needs the ball on every single play — I respect that. Those are guys that feel like they can beat any DB, any coverage all the time. So I expect him to have a really good year.”
Landers will look to make the impact Briles believes he’s capable of as he starts his fourth college season with a third program. Although he only appeared in seven games with Toledo last season and caught just 20 passes, Landers established himself as a big-play threat. He turned his 20 receptions into 514 yards and five touchdowns — averaging 25.7 yards per reception.
