KJ Jefferson will enter the 2023 season as one of the more experienced quarterbacks in all of the SEC. However, there has still been a learning process since Dan Enos was hired as the offensive coordinator. A new offense is being installed following Kendal Briles‘ departure from Arkansas.

Thus far, Enos is really impressed with how Jefferson is progressing. Not from a passer standpoint, a place you would expect an OC to talk about with the quarterback.

Instead, Jefferson is doing well at the line of scrimmage. Enos believes Jefferson is checking Arkansas into the right plays in the run game. Also when it is time to drop back to pass, the quarterback is picking up where blocks need to be implemented.

A good mix of experience for Jefferson while adding a new factor to his game.

“He’s really progressing,” Enos said. “I like where he is at. I really like where he is at from a run game standpoint and a protection standpoint. He’s doing a really good job of understanding our run game when things are not going to be good.

“Or on the flip side of that, ‘this might be a better play based on the structure.’ And he’s doing that at the line of scrimmage. Then, his ability to help us in some of our five and six-man protections. He’s grown a lot in those areas.”

Running the ball is going to be important for Arkansas. Rocket Sanders is going to be the highlight but part of Jefferson’s skill set involves running the ball. If Jefferson is going to be able to check the Razorbacks into the correct call, they will be one of the more efficient teams in the country.

Combine that with the quality offensive line and the overall unit is looking solid. Enos has a big opportunity during his first year as the OC to make an early impression with Jefferson at the helm.

Jefferson will get his first shot at displaying his new-found talents on Sept. 2 against Western Carolina. Due to who the opponent is, there might be some additional time for a learning curve. In fact, Arkansas does not play a Power Five opponent until Week 3, coming against BYU.

They will be hoping for a big season in Fayetteville. Even with Sam Pittman bringing in a fresh set of coordinators, having an experienced quarterback should help in a big way.
