Devastating news broke on Monday surrounding former Arkansas and NFL running back Alex Collins. He passed away at just the age of 28, with both the Razorbacks and Baltimore Ravens delivering his death via Twitter.

Just a few hours later, the cause of Collins’ death has been revealed. He was in a motorcycle accident, colliding with an SUV. The accident occurred in the hometown of Collins, Fort Lauderdale. A statement from the Broward County Sherriff’s office told the entire story.

“The crash occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 13, near the 3300 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard,” a statement said via Andy Slater. The preliminary investigation revealed Alexnder Collins was traveling eastbound on a 2004 Suzuki GSX-R600K motorcycle on West Oakland Park Boulevard approaching Northwest 33rd Avenue. At the same time, an adult female was traveling westbound in a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban SUV on West Oakland Park Boulevard.

“According to investigators, at some point, the Chevrolet driver proceeded to turn left to travel south onto Northwest 33rd Avenue. As the car crossed the eastbound lanes, the motorcycle struck the rear passenger side of the SUV. The impact caused the motorcyclist to enter the rear passenger side window of the Chevrolet and come to a final rest inside the car. The collision also cause the Chevrolet to rotate clockwise before finally resting.”

At the end of the statement, the Broward County Sherriff’s office said the fatal crash is still under investigation.

Alex Collins to be remembered by successful career at Arkansas before time in the NFL

Collins is originally from the state of Florida but played in college ball at Arkansas. He spent just three seasons with the Razorbacks but was consistent throughout his time there. All resulted in Collins rushing for over 1,000 yards while getting to 20 touchdowns during the 2015 season.

Just three other SEC players have run for 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. Elite company for Collins.

Only one player in Arkansas football history has more rushing yards (3,703) than Collins — Darren McFadden. Collins will go down as one of the best running backs in program history.

Collins then declared for the 2016 NFL Draft, where he was a fifth-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks. However, he spent just one season in the Pacific Northwest before signing with Baltimore. A majority of his NFL production came with the Ravens, coming just three yards short of having 2,000 career yards.

Another stint in Seattle was Collins’ last in the NFL, with it coming to an end after the 2021 season. However, Collins got back into professional football via the USFL with the Memphis Showboats. He was placed on Injured Reserve on May 4 and did not make another appearance.
