Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson safety Anquon Fegans took a visit to Alabama on Sunday, but when the four-star made his decision, it came down to Auburn and LSU. Clemson and Georgia were also finalists, but the home-state school on the Plains beat out the Tigers in Baton Rouge.

“Why not stay home and do it for your home state,” Fegans told On3. “It was a difficult decision. There is something about Baton Rouge, but I decided to stay home. I can stay home, put it on for the home state and help build the program up.”

His brother Tre’quon Fegans is now at Auburn too after transferring from USC. That connection factored into the decision too, but that was a small part of it.

“It will be cool to learn from him and team up with him at Auburn, but that wasn’t what made my decision. It came down to the people, the place and the culture at Auburn. Every time I am there, it always has the feeling of being at home. It is a different culture there. That made a big difference.”

Fegans is a believer in the Auburn coaching staff

The direction of the program also made an impact on Fegans. The No. 57 prospect in the On3 Industry Ranking believes in Hugh Freeze and his staff.

“You saw what Auburn did last year against top teams. They lost close games with that roster, and now coach Freeze is building his roster and getting the type of players he can win with there.

“Coach Freeze can get Auburn back to the top. He is going to take the program very far. He knows his X’s and O’s, he is very relatable and he is a phenomenal person. Coach Freeze is going to do big things.”

Wesley McGriff and Charles Kelly were very active in recruiting Fegans too. He is excited to play for and learn from both of them.

“They are great guys,” Fegans said. “Coach Crime (McGriff) is funny, coach Kelly is relatable and both are very real. They both are great coaches.”
