Auburn defensive lineman Trill Carter was shot this past Thursday in Charlotte and subsequently released from the hospital, per David Newton of ESPN.

“Auburn defensive lineman DeAngelo Carter, listed on the school website as Trill Carter, was shot late Thursday night in Charlotte, according to the police report obtained by ESPN,” Newton wrote. “Carter was shot in the chest area by an unknown suspect around 11:45 p.m. in a parking lot on the 500 block of East 6th Street in uptown Charlotte, according to the report. He was transported to a local hospital.

“According to The Athletic, which spoke with Carter by phone, the player was hospitalized for 2 ½ hours and released. Surgery was not required. No suspect or witnesses were listed on the police report.”

Additionally, Newton added that there are currently no suspects for the shooting, and there weren’t any witnesses listed on the police report. An Auburn spokesperson also told ESPN that the school is aware of the shooting, but they’re not commenting further on the matter.

Carter was in his sixth season at the collegiate level, but it was his first as a member of the Tigers in 2024. He amassed three total tackles this past season, as Auburn went 5-7 and missed out on making it to a bowl game.

Prior to joining Auburn, Carter spent four seasons with the Minnesota Golden Gophers, and one with the Texas Longhorns. The college football world is hoping for a speedy recovery for the defensive lineman after his involvement in a frightening situation.
