Auburn is set to hire Georgia Southern’s Marcus Davis as the new wide receivers coach, On3’s Matt Zenitz confirmed. Auburn Live’s Jeffrey Lee first reported the impending news. Davis is a former Auburn wide receiver.

Davis played for then-coach Gus Malzahn with the Tigers during his playing days. As far as his coaching career, he began in 2020 as a grad-assistant at Florida State and then became the wide receivers coach at Hawaii.

Georgia Southern coach Clay Helton hired Davis as the receivers coach a year later.

Davis is slated to be the youngest coach on new head coach Hugh Freeze’s staff at Auburn. He is also seen as a rising star in the profession and could add instant buzz to the pass catchers room with the Tigers.

During his playing days, Davis played from 2013-16 with Auburn. In 42 career games, Davis had 83 catches for 650 yards, three touchdowns and 7.8 yards per catch.

Freeze was hired away from Liberty to replace Bryan Harsin.

“First, I want to acknowledge Cadillac Williams for the incredible job he did as interim head coach. The impact he made is immeasurable and cannot be overstated,” Freeze said.

“Secondly, Auburn is one of the preeminent programs in college football and I’m very appreciative of President Roberts and John Cohen for this opportunity at Auburn. I’ve been fortunate to witness first-hand how special Auburn is during my time as a head coach in the SEC and while visiting my daughter Jordan who attended Auburn and currently lives in the community. I can’t wait to work with our student-athletes and the Auburn family to bring championships back to the Plains.”
