ESPN has released its matchup predictor for the Auburn Tigers ahead of the 2022 college football season, according to the ESPN Football Power Index. If ESPN’s numbers pan out, Auburn can expect to find itself right back in the middle of the SEC West pack with a possible 8-4 regular season.

The predictions have Georgia, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Alabama as favorites over Auburn as of this writing – each of which will be road trips for the Tigers this season and are expected to finish unblemished at Jordan-Hare Stadium in 2022.

The Auburn quarterback battle

Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin has a decision to make under center ahead of the 2022 college football season in the form of former Texas A&M quarterback Zach Calzada, former LSU quarterback TJ Finley and former Oregon quarterback Robby Ashford.

On3’s JD PicKell noted that the Auburn coaching staff is walking on eggshells this season after Harsin’s offseason inquiry that nearly saw him removed from the program. Harsin wouldn’t put just anyone behind center when he’s inching closer to the hot seat in just his second year with the program, so Auburn fans should have faith in the coaching staff when evaluating their decision throughout fall camp.

Ultimately, PicKell and many other experts have pointed toward Calzada taking over the starting job. While that mostly has to do with his experience as the starter in several high-profile games as the starter in College Station, including a victory over then No. 1 Alabama and even a 20-3 victory over Auburn last season as well.
