Auburn pitcher Ben Bosse enters Transfer Portal
Former Auburn Tigers right-handed pitcher Ben Bosse has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.
Ben Bosse spent two seasons with the Auburn baseball program, first joining the team in 2022. He would make seven appearances in that freshman season before not making any recorded appearances since that time.
During his time at Auburn, Bosse had a 3.86 ERA in 4.2 innings pitched. He gave up four hits and two walks during that time while hitting another batter with a pitch. He also struck out six batters. That was good for a 1.286 WHIP during his Auburn career.
In 2022 and 2024, Bosse pitched for Brazos Valley in the Texas Collegiate League. That’s a Summer baseball league. There, he pitched 39 innings in 10 games and had a 4.38 ERA, a 1.641 WHIP, 40 strikeouts, and gave up three home runs.
In 2024, Ben Bosse also pitched for Blinn College, a community college in Brenham, Texas. There, he threw 27.1 innings on 18 relief appearances. He had a 4.61 ERA and struck out 33 batters. He also gave up 21 hits and 16 walks.
Bosse was named to the 2021-22 SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll and the 2023 Spring SEC Academic Honor Roll.

Auburn baseball coach Butch Thompson is preparing for his 10th season with the program. After missing the postseason in 2021, Thompson led the Tigers to the College World Series in 2022 and the NCAA Regional in 2023. However, Auburn once again missed the postseason in 2024. Auburn went just 8-21 in SEC play.
Auburn finished 2024 with an ERA of 5.94 as a team. That was the second worst in the entire SEC, only ahead of the Florida Gators. The Tigers were also last in opposing batting average, with teams hitting .286 off the Tigers, and second to last in batters struck out, with 478.
The Transfer Portal in College Baseball
Like other sports, baseball is adapting to changes brought about by the Transfer Portal.
Thousands of baseball players made the decision to transfer following the end of the 2024 season, looking to find a new program before the fall semester begins. That’s a lot of shuffling and it can be difficult for coaches to manage scholarships, given that NCAA Division I baseball teams get between 11 and 12 scholarships to use. That’s less than half of the number of players on a team, leaving most players on a partial scholarship.
The Spring Transfer window in college baseball opened in May, amid the postseason, and stayed open for 45 days. There is another window that typically opens in December. However, players can also enter at various other times due to changes in their program, like a head coach leaving.
