The Auburn Tigers have taken the lead over the No. 2-seeded Stanford Cardinal in the sixth inning of the College World Series consolation rounds off the heels of Cole Foster’s near-grand slam that sent three Tigers baserunners home Monday afternoon.

The base-cleaning hit comes after Foster left Saturday’s College World Series matchup against Ole Miss with an illness, according to the ESPN broadcast. Foster had reportedly been sick all of Saturday and attempted to give it a go, but ultimately had to stick to the sidelines for his health.

Prior to his exit due to illness, Cole Foster had two at bats but had failed to record a hit – that has now changed in a major way.

Auburn currently leads Stanford 4-2 in the sixth inning live on ESPN with both teams facing elimination with a loss.

WATCH: Blake Burkhalter closes door on dangerous inning for Auburn with nasty strikeout

Auburn held onto their lead over Stanford in their elimination game after Blake Burkhalter came into the game with bases loaded. Burkhalter was called upon to preserve the 6-2 lead with the tying run at the plate for Stanford, and he delivered a nasty strikeout pitch with a full count to end the inning without any scoring from the Cardinals.

With little time to warm up to the game’s pressure, Burkhalter worked into a full count with Stanford players on all the bases. Brett Barrera went down swinging at the tough pitch, just missing the ball as it broke downwards at the last moment. The Cardinals are no stranger to pressure at the plate with the bases loaded either, as they lead the nation in grand slams this year.

Tommy Sheehan recorded two quick outs to start the inning, but struggled a bit as the top of Stanford’s order came back around to the plate. A double, followed by a hit batter and a single loaded the bases and ended Sheehan’s day on the mound.

Burkhalter didn’t stop dealing as he continued into the eighth inning, striking out another two batters — giving him three strikeouts on four batters faced. His pitching helped preserve the Auburn lead and set them up for another elimination game with the loser of tonight’s matchup between Arkansas and Ole Miss.

Three of the SEC’s four representatives all were placed on the same side of the CWS bracket, but all four remained in the tournament after the first two teams went home. Texas A&M joined Auburn in losing their opening game and surviving their elimination game, with the Aggies sending home the Texas Longhorns on Sunday.

Although there’s no guarantee any of the SEC teams will reach the CWS Finals, the door is still open for a conference showdown to decide the national champions.
