Auburn tight end Landen King makes cryptic post after exiting transfer portal
Landen King had already made news on Tuesday when he removed his name from the transfer portal, as reported by On3’s Matt Zenitz, but he again drew attention with a social media post. Shortly after his decision to Auburn became public, the tight end posted an upside-down smiley face.
In 2022, it is no surprise anymore that one emoji can set off an entire fanbase – or two – as they attempt to decipher the message hidden in a circular yellow face among dozens of other similar faces conveying different emotions.

Landen King had one catch for 24 yards this season. The catch came against Penn State, and was one of the few big offensive plays for the Tigers in a blowout loss. He has 6 receptions for 83 yards and one touchdown at Auburn. His one touchdown came in overtime against Alabama last season.
The sophomore tight end turned wide receiver was recently removed from the Auburn roster, but now plans to return for another season despite a vacant head coaching job to fill and no clear indication of position coaches or support staff which might remain beyond interim head coach Cadillac Williams – who has certainly made his value known.

However, many college football insiders have heavily linked current Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin – who has denied the rumors at every turn – as the likely man for the job. The recent back and forth he had with media and a team meeting on Tuesday, reported by ESPN’s Chris Low, have sparked the discussion further and King’s post has been taken as another input in the saga.
Of course, he could be sub-tweeting a friend or even making his thoughts known on a different topic – his own transfer portal exit perhaps. But in the world of social media, timing is everything, and the timing certainly leaves people wondering.
Like most things, emojis can also carry different meaning to different people, leaving some with a split opinion on the message. Dictionary.com lists many intended emotions from silliness to sarcasm, irony or passive aggressiveness.
