Bo Nix reveals one of his 'ultimate goals' in college football was to beat Alabama
You saw the picture on TV during Auburn games. It’s no secret Bo Nix grew up cheering for the Tigers. His Dad, Pat Nix, was the starting quarterback there at one point during the mid-1990s. His son wound up being a five-star and the No. 2 quarterback in the country, choosing to play for then-head coach Gus Malzhan.
Nix likely had multiple goals for his college career but one of them was getting an Iron Bowl win. Growing up an Auburn fan, taking down Alabama as the starting quarterback was likely a dream. He pulled the accomplishment off at Jordan-Hare Stadium in a game those on the Plains will not forget anytime soon.
“One of my ultimate goals was to play football at Auburn and beat Alabama,” Nix said. “I did that.”
Auburn has had a ton of success at home against Alabama while Nick Saban has been in Tuscaloosa. Outside of the Kick Six, the 2019 matchup is likely the sweetest of them all. Technically, there were still College Football Playoff hopes for the Crimson Tide being ranked No. 5.
A stellar Auburn defensive performance against Mac Jones put those to bed, scoring two defensive touchdowns. Nix had two scores of his own, one in the air and another on the ground. Fans stormed the field, signifying another famous AU Iron Bowl victory.
Even if Nix had not been the starting quarterback, it would have been a special moment for him on the sidelines. But being able to contribute to winning what some consider college football’s best rivalry meant that much more to him.

Nix got just one other shot at Alabama, coming at Bryant-Denny Stadium the following season. He was not as successful as the Crimson Tide were on a mission toward another national title.
During the 2021 season, he had to watch from the sidelines, being out injured. TJ Finley was the starter for what turned about to be another classic game but went in favor of Bryce Young and Alabama.
There will always be the 2019 Iron Bowl, something nobody can ever take away from Nix. He still remembers the games fondly, discussing it nearly four years later. If his own children grow up Auburn fans, they will hear stories about the game as well.
His time on the Plains might have ended on a sour note but Nix will still be remembered forever for that specific performance.
