Auburn center Johni Broome won’t play against No. 15 Mississippi State on Tuesday night, coach Bruce Pearl announced to reporters on Monday afternoon.

Broome was injured during a come-from-behind victory over South Carolina on Saturday. He left in the second half after suffering a scary ankle injury, quickly ruled out of the game.

The talented big man went up for a rebound and landed on Chaney Johnson’s foot, rolling his ankle in the process. He immediately yelled in pain as he grabbed for his left leg, and he needed help from the training staff to get to the locker room.

Speaking on the SEC Now postgame show, Pearl said Johni Broome had a “significant sprain” of his left ankle.

“He’s got a significant sprain,” Pearl said. “When we get back to Auburn tonight, we’ll get him an MRI and see if it’s anything else going on there.”

Saturday’s injury is the second for Broome this year. He previously hurt his shoulder late in non-conference play, but didn’t miss any significant time as a result, quickly returning for the next game against Purdue.

Johni Broome has had a sizeable impact on Auburn’s success this season as the nation’s current No. 1 ranked team.

The veteran big man is averaging a career-high 17.9 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, averaging a double-double. He has also dished out 3.3 assists per game while blocking 2.7 shots per contest.

Auburn will take on Mississippi State without Johni Broome at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday, with a broadcast slated for the SEC Network.
