It’s been a big week for Carnell ‘Cadillac’ Williams as the former Auburn running back is getting a turn in the big seat as the interim head coach in the wake of Bryan Harsin’s firing. One of the first jobs as head coach: Addressing the players.

Speaking on the SEC coaches teleconference on Wednesday — another first for Williams — the interim Auburn coach shared what he told his players. Ultimately, the message is pretty simple: Take care of each other and work hard.

“One thing I stressed on was family,” Williams said. “Two decades ago, that is one of the main reasons I chose Auburn University. Because of the family atmosphere. I grew up in a big family and I came here and I loved everything about it. That blue collar mentality. How, not only do they love Auburn football, but love Auburn and just love people. So the people within these walls are what makes Auburn great. So, that’s one thing I hit on with these players.”

With four games at the helm, Williams will have plenty of opportunity to show off his in-game coaching acumen, but how he keeps the team intact and engaged after a disappointing run so far seems just as important a job.

Based on his early message, plus his Auburn roots, Williams seemed like a good choice to handle that job. Secondly, there’s always developing for next year — and it’s not like Auburn won’t be trying to win the next game, either.

“And then the second thing is just hard work,” Williams said. “That blue collar mentality, that relentless effort. Finishing on every play. Never quitting. Just outworking your opponent in each and every thing you do.”

With Mississippi State, Texas A&M and Alabama still on the schedule, there’s no guarantee on-field success is imminent, but Williams has the right outlook to get things on track on The Plains.
