LOOK: Gus Malzahn offers congratulations, Auburn sweater vest collection to Hugh Freeze
Former Auburn coach Gus Malzahn joked with newly hired coach Hugh Freeze after his hiring, letting him know he can borrow his sweater vests. Freeze accepted the warm welcome by joking right back with the long-time Tigers coach that he would pass on the sweater vests, but would accept his old Auburn visors.
Gus Malzahn congratulates Hugh Freeze on hiring
“Happy for my friend Coach Hugh Freeze for getting the Auburn job! That’s a special place, you’re going to love it! I’ve also got a couple old sweater vests laying around if you ever need them,” said Malzahn on Twitter after Freeze’s hiring.
“You’re a dear friend. Thank you so much. I’ll take your visors but pass on the sweater vests,” joked Freeze in return.
The special relationship between the two coaches was on full display Monday, as the former Auburn coach welcomed the newest one. Malzahn and Freeze built up a great rivalry — and apparent friendship — while battling each other as coaches in the SEC. With Freeze returning to the conference to take Malzahn’s former job, he was quick to joke that he still had some of his signature Auburn sweaters around to give him.

Freeze also found time on social media after a busy day of being officially introduced as the newest Auburn coach to share a message of excitement with Tigers fans. Shortly after the official Auburn Football Twitter account welcomed Freeze home, Freeze commented on the announcement with his first “War Eagle” cry as head coach.
Freeze also provided an official statement as part of the university’s reveal that he had been hired, and praised interim coach Cadillac Williams for the job he has done as interim coach for the program. As part of the official hiring of Freeze, Williams was reported to be staying with the Tigers as part of the coaching staff as Freeze assumes head coaching duties.
