Hugh Freeze 'pleased' with what Auburn offense has put in under Philip Montgomery
Hugh Freeze was pleased with the Auburn offense’s construction under new offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery.
It’s only spring practice, but the Tigers’ offense already has fancy new toys. Well, offensive schemes to be exact.
That’s what Freeze dove into with On3’s J.D. PicKell on The Hard Count.
“I’m pleased with what we’ve put in the spring,” Freeze said. “Obviously, with it being totally new verbiage, totally new schemes to what they were used to, you know, it’s not everything. But it was enough for us to kind of figure out we have a chance to be decent at this run scheme or this RPO scheme or this pass game. Fall camp and game planning, I think we’ll be able to get more in but I’m pleased with what we got in the spring and we’re gonna be a mixture of tempo and non-tempo and some of that is still to be determined and how much of it is based on, I think you’ve got to play complimentary football.
“That is best for your whole team, not just for your side and sitting in my chair, I think I have a better understanding of that than then I once did.”
Freeze elaborated more on complimentary football from his time at Liberty. The up tempo offense worked well with former quarterback Malik Willis, ironically a former Auburn signal caller.

But if Freeze’s Auburn squad sticks with the complimentary football, the Tigers could certainly be more consistent in 2023.
“I really tried to do that well at Liberty and play really complimentary football,” Freeze said. “And I think it benefited our defense greatly. But I used tempo when I needed to. So I think whatever percentage of that, we’re still a ways away from determining who that is and probably a few games in before we know, ‘hey, this is kind of who we need to be in a current game.’
“But, you know, Philip’s always had exciting offenses, and I’d like to think we’ve been pretty good offensively at the places we’ve been to and it’s been fun to collaborate with him on how we see this developing.”
