Hugh Freeze provides Auburn injury report entering fall camp
As Auburn begins fall camp to open the Hugh Freeze era, the Tigers do so in relatively good shape and without many costly injuries to players on the roster. The Auburn injury report is pretty clean.
Of course, Freeze will be hoping that continues, with running back Brian Battie the only player he gave a specific update on when asked for an injury report on Thursday.
“Battie is limited but will practice from his, he had the procedure done on his foot,” Freeze said. “Shoot, I think that’s it. I think we’re blessed. There may be a few more that are somewhat limited, but I think everybody will be out there today.”
The only other player that came up during the Auburn injury report was receiver Jyaire Shorter, a transfer from North Texas.
“We’ll monitor his reps but he’ll go,” Freeze said.
That’s good news for the Tigers, who are counting on Shorter to provide some additional punch in the passing game. In 2022, Shorter led the FBS in yards per reception at 27.2.
He recorded 23 catches for 628 yards and 11 touchdowns, so he has a knack for finding the end zone so long as he can stay off the Auburn injury report.
What is Jarquez Hunter’s status?
Though the Auburn injury report was relatively light, it’s still unclear what the status of star running back Jarquez Hunter is with the team.

Back in May, Hunter came under some hot water over an inappropriate video featuring himself. Since then, there’s been very little public comment on Hunter or his situation and that trend continued to start this month. At recent media availability, Freeze was asked again about Hunter and his status. To which Freeze gave another tight-lipped response:
“I’ll say this again,” Freeze said. “I understand the question, but matters related to team rules and procedures… they are handled internally and will not be discussed publicly.”
Hunter is one of the top players on the Auburn roster this season, coming in at No. 56 in On3’s Top 100 College Football Player in 2023 this week. He totaled 668 yards and seven touchdowns, which ranked third on the team behind Tank Bigsby and Robby Ashford.
Hunter was also one of Auburn’s top performers during spring practice and came in as one of the 10 offensive spring practice standouts you need to know, according to On3’s Matt Zenitz. Hunter enters his junior season with 1,261 career yards and 10 touchdowns.
