Every year in March Madness the basketball games are getting cranking as spring football is firing up around the country. For coach Hugh Freeze, the prospect of possibly stealing a couple Auburn basketball players for use on the gridiron is always tantalizing.

Freeze even has certain guys penciled in at certain spots.

“I like (Jaylin Williams), he could play somewhere for me,” Freeze said, quickly pointing out his most coveted hooper. “I like him. I like his demeanor. I think he could play tight end.”

Williams is a 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward, so he would certainly make for a challenging matchup on opposing defensive backs.

Freeze’s hypothetical Auburn basketball player takeover doesn’t just include pass-catchers, though that’s often the easiest position to pencil guys in at thanks to their obvious skills.

Freeze also sees some potential to stick a few guys in the trenches. Like backup center Dylan Cardwell, who checks in at 6-foot-11, 256 pounds.

“Big 44, he could be a four-technique in our odd front, for sure,” Freeze said.

Two others piqued Freeze’s interest from the Auburn basketball roster, one as a pass catcher and another as a safety.

Guard Allen Flanigan was the pass-catcher, checking in at 6-foot-6, 220 pounds. Freeze can envision him getting singled up in the end zone ready to do some damage.

“I don’t know how fast Flanigan is, but I like tall receivers if he were fast enough,” Freeze said. “I’d like to have that at the 10-yard line for a fade ball.”

The final Auburn basketball player to make Freeze’s fantasy football squad was backup guard Tre Donaldson. Freeze likes the way he comes downhill with the basketball and could see that translating in a different sport.

“There’s a backup point guard that comes in, (Tre Donaldson), I think he’s a great safety,” Freeze said. “Yeah, I think he’s a good safety.”

All in all, Freeze has assembled a nice little dream squad of crossover hoopers.

“Those kind of stand out as I see a good four-technique, a good maybe rush end or tight end,” the new Auburn football coach said.
