Carnell ‘Cadillac’ Williams is the feel-good story in the SEC right now, getting his first win as Auburn‘s interim head coach against Texas A&M. Everybody on the Plains thoroughly enjoyed the victory as well, celebrating in a big way at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

But all eyes seem set on the future, with exciting times ahead for the Auburn program. Whether it’s for next week’s Iron Bowl against Alabama or beginning next year with a new, flashy head coach hire athletic director John Cohen hopes to bring into the program. Everyone is wanting to get past 2021 and move on to bigger and better things.

Williams doesn’t view it that way, wanting to stay “tunnel-visioned” on Western Kentucky after addressing the “elephant in the room” with his team. There are distractions about the future but for now, Auburn has the chance to win another home football game.

“Honestly, I just had a talk before the Mississippi State on Friday night with the team and kind of addressed the elephant in the room about who the next coach is going to be, our next job or next destination or our next opponent,” said Williams during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference. “Just a little bit of myself, I have always kind of lived in the now. I truly feel like if I take care of now — right now will take care of my next.

“To be honest with you, I am so tunnel-visioned with what I got to do on a day-to-day basis. I cannot even think about that game (the Iron Bowl). We got a Western Kentucky team that is a darn good team. So, sorry. I can’t even answer that question. I’m sure next week I could be able to rock and roll with it. But right now, it’s all about Western Kentucky.”

Williams is a pro at this whole head coaching thing at this point, using coach speak when asked about something occurring in the future. However, with how the Iron Bowl rivalry works on both sides and an FCS opponent visiting Tuscaloosa this weekend and a Group of 5 opponent visiting Auburn, it has to be on the minds of each program.

But at least publically, Williams is just looking to get another win in front of a home crowd. It will be a different type of challenge against Western Kentucky compare to Texas A&M, hoping to make it two victories in as many games.
