Turnovers have become a major issue for the Auburn Tigers this season. It’s a problem that quarterback Payton Thorne knows he and the rest of the offense need to address.

While making an appearance on The Next Round, Thorne explained how Auburn is working to cut down on turnovers moving forward this season.

“It’s kind of a mindset type of thing,” Payton Thorne said. “Obviously, it’s a performance-based stat. You have to protect the ball when you’re getting tackled. You have to protect the ball when you’re throwing the ball and when you’re catching the ball. We’ve talked about how everybody’s involved with that. Offensive linemen even play a part in that, a small role in protecting the ball too.”

The Auburn Tigers are currently tied for 132nd in the country in turnover margin. They’re at -11 on the season, which averages out to -1.83 turnovers per game. That includes six fumbles lost and nine team interceptions. Only ECU has thrown more interceptions as a team this season.

“So, it’s a group effort. It starts with the quarterback, obviously, when I touch the ball every single play, for the most part. I have that responsibility to take care of the ball,” Thorne said. “So, obviously, everybody’s been talking about it a lot. But just kind of getting back to trying to play sound football Turnovers is obviously a big part of that and there’s a lot of other things that play into winning football too. Complimentary football, field position, red zone efficiency, third down efficiency. There’s a ton of things that goes into those things and turnovers is maybe the most important one of those.”

Payton Thorne, in particular, has been a major part of that turnover issue. His six interceptions have been costly this season. That includes the pick-six he threw against Oklahoma that became a key reason why Auburn lost the game.

Despite all of that, after not turning the ball over against Georgia, there is a chance Auburn has corrected some of those issues. Now, Auburn has a bye week to continue to correct the issue before playing Missouri. For the season, Missouri has forced five total turnovers.

Payton Thorne addresses relationship with Hugh Freeze, facing criticism

Following the Georgia game, Payton Thorne spoke about his relationship with head coach Hugh Freeze and how they handle issues.

“Yeah, I think it was a fourth-down play that was being looked at. I won’t get in too much into it. I could explain what happened, but I don’t think that would help our team. So I’ll keep that one in house,” Thorne said.

“But I will say I did not check any play. It was something that we talked about on the sideline that I said what I saw and what it was, and then obviously you know our coaches saw after the game when they watched the film too what I was saying. So we’ve handled it. But now it’s just moving forward and doing what we can to execute out there and to give ourselves the best chance to win the rest of the season.”

To this point, Auburn is 2-4 on the season and 0-3 in SEC play. With that, the Tigers are going to look to quickly turn things around.
