Robby Ashford learned what was nearly a costly lesson in Auburn’s OT win over Missouri this weekend. During the third quarter, Ashford took off as a lead blocker and was injured on the play. He returned to the game and the Tigers won, but, with all their QB concerns, it was a close call for Auburn.

Ashford spoke about the play during media on Monday. First and foremost, he wanted to reiterate that he’s okay after the play that took him out for a bit.

“I feel fine,” said Ashford. “I’m ready to go. Just making sure I keep the body right and just preparing. That’s all there is to it.”

With TJ Finley and Zach Calzada injured already, Bryan Harsin had to send Holden Geriner out in Ashford’s absence. Considering the QB controversy on The Plains over the offseason, few expected things to ever reach that point. Still, Ashford was able to return and says he will take more care now. He wants to do anything he can to help the team win, but he wants to be smart about it too.

“That’s just me being a player. I want to do whatever for the team. But I kind of learned my lesson a little bit. I won’t be as competitive, as hard going (to block),” Ashford said. “Just trying to get my body out there just to set up a block. Probably not try to take them to the ground but just a little push or something just to be able to create a space. That’s just the biggest thing…Making sure I stay good.”

Robby Ashford will continue to be Auburn’s QB1 this weekend against LSU. He’ll be much more careful against the Tigers, though, whenever another opportunity arises to give his body up for the team.
