WATCH: Bo Nix addresses rumors on future with Auburn football
With his season over and Auburn likely headed to a mid-level bowl game after going 6-6 in the regular season, Tigers fans are understandably beginning to look ahead to next season.
At the center of that debate is quarterback play and whether junior quarterback Bo Nix will return for another season with Auburn.
Nix, who suffered a season-ending broken ankle against Mississippi State on Nov. 13, made his weekly appearance Birmingham’s “The Next Round” to discuss what he believes his next season might look like.
“I’m graduating in a couple weeks,” Nix said. “I will have graduated in three years. That was my goal coming in. So Auburn is definitely my school. I think it will always be my school. But obviously right now, I’m just trying to get healthy. I’m not sure what next year looks like. I gotta get my ankle better first, gotta make sure that I can play and get back to my normal self. Then obviously I’ll graduate, get through the ball game.”
After suffering the injury, Nix had surgery. Prior to last weekend’s Iron Bowl against Alabama, he told CBS reporter Jamie Erdahl he was doing well, and it should not be too long before he is getting back into things on the practice field.
In addition to the injury factor, Nix took a moment to comment on two of the hottest topics in college football right now: the blanket eligibility waiver granted as a result of COVID-19 and the transfer portal.

“I think a lot of juniors are in the same boat,” Nix added. “Well not just juniors, but guys that came back for a COVID year and still have another year of eligibility. There’s a lot of things that guys can do nowadays and not sure what that is for me, but like I said, I want to get my ankle better then worry about that in the future.”
Primary factors on the QB’s mind?
There are a lot of pieces that result in transferring, but Nix has a big one in mind.
“My ultimate goal is to play in the NFL,” Nix said when asked what factors would go into his decision for next year. “That’s got a lot to do with it moving on in the future. Looking back, we’ll just see what’s going on, what has changed, and then we will make a decision from there. It’s too big of a decision to make in about a week or over the phone on an interview.”
The three-year starter threw for 2,294 yards with 11 touchdowns and three interceptions this season before the injury. He also ran for four scores.
LSU transfer TJ Finley started Auburn’s final two regular season games in Nix’s place. Both were losses at the hands of South Carolina and Alabama. Auburn is now waiting to see their postseason fate.
