Baylor SID shuts down talk of Scott Drew move in cryptic tweet
Baylor head coach Scott Drew is happy in Waco and excited for his future at the helm of the Bears, despite recent reports that might suggest otherwise.
Drew, 51, has been at Baylor since 2003, when the Bears hired him following a one-year stint at Valparaiso, and he’s helped put Waco on a pedestal in the college basketball world. It took drew five seasons to notch his first winning record at Baylor, which came in 2007-08, but the Bears have not fallen below .500 since then. He has amassed a 398-221 overall record at the helm, making the NCAA Tournament 10 times in his tenure, and — of course — the Bears won the NCAA Tournament national championship crown in the 2020-21 season, knocking off top-ranked Gonzaga in the finals.
The three-time Big 12 Coach of the Year, who’s won two Big 12 regular-season titles in 2021 and 2022, was reported to have interest in the vacancy at Georgia, per Graham Coffey. But Baylor’s SID shot that report down shortly after it was published.
“This is 100% false,” tweeted David Kaye, Baylor’s assistant athletic director for communications. “I know for a fact Scott Drew is genuinely excited about the future of the Big 12.”

Michigan prepared to offer No. 1 recruit $10.5M over 4 years
Georgia, which reportedly has reached out to Drew’s camp, just fired head coach Tom Crean after four years at the helm of the Bulldogs. Formerly the head coach at Indiana and Marquette, Crean had by far and away the worst win percentage of his career while in Athens. He went 47-74 in four years at Georgia, amassing a .388 win percentage, along with a 15-57 record in SEC play. Georgia finished no better than 10th in the SEC in Crean’s four-year tenure, and the Bulldogs never made it to the NCAA Tournament. Georgia finished the 2021-22 record with a 6-25 record (1-17 in conference play), placing the Bulldogs 14th in the SEC.
According to the report from Coffey, “Drew is open to further conversations about the job after UGA representatives reached out to gauge preliminary interest. It is believed Drew has concerns about the future of the Big 12.
“Sources confirmed that Drew didn’t slam the door on the possibility of coming to Athens, and he is open to further conversations about the job,” Coffey wrote. “It is expected that parties connected to UGA’s search will have subsequent contact with Drew in the coming days to further gauge Drew’s interest and find out what it would take for Georgia to hire him.”
