Baylor quarterback RJ Martinez enters NCAA transfer portal
The Baylor Bears have wrapped up the 2024 spring practice, and another offensive player is on their way out of the program. On3 has learned that quarterback RJ Martinez has entered the NCAA transfer portal on Monday.
Martinez joined Baylor last offseason after committing to the program and head coch Dave Aranda in the spring of 2023. The six-foot senior quarterback headed to Waco, TX, after spending the first two years of his collegiate career as a Northern Arizona Lumberjack. As a Lumberjack, Martinez passed for 4,598 yards and 30 touchdowns over two seasons. He also proved himself capable as a dual-threat quarterback with 13 rushing touchdowns at Northern Arizona.
It was a different tune at Baylor for Martinez. As a Bear, he was unable to replicate the impressive play he displayed as a Lumberjack despite earning ample opportunity to do so. Following the injury to Baylor’s starting quarterback to start the season, Blake Shapen, Martinez, and Sawyer Robertson saw their fair share of action in the 2023 season.
Ultimately, Robertson received the majority of the playing time through six games. However, his struggles, completing just 56.4 percent of his past attempts with two touchdowns and four interceptions, provided an opportunity for Martinez. In three games, Martinez completed just 50 percent of his pass attempts ( 12 of 24) for 110 yards. He also recorded three rushing attempts for 22 yards as Baylor finished the year 3-9.

Jacurri Brown commits to transfer to UCF over Baylor
This is a tough day for Baylor and Aranda in terms of quarterback news. On Monday, former Miami Hurricanes quarterback Jaccuri Brown elected to commit to one of Baylor’s new Big 12 rivals, UCF. After opting to enter the transfer portal, Baylor was listed as one of the top five schools in hot pursuit of his services. Unfortunately for the Bears, the Black Knights ended up as the victor and the Brown sweepstakes.
Brown played high school football at Lowndes (Georgia), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 308 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
For his career, Brown has completed 61.8 percent of passes for 411 yards and four touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 278 yards and two touchdowns during his college career.
