Baylor running back Bryson Washington was injured after taking a carry for a short gain at the end of the first quarter in the Kinder’s Texas Bowl against LSU on Tuesday.

Washington carried the ball up the middle and made contact with a couple defenders. Initially he popped back up before wobbling, hitting a knee and then laying on his back on the turf.

After a couple moments with trainers, Bryson Washington would walk off the field with an assist.

The ESPN broadcast crew calling the game also chimed in on his health early in the second quarter, as Washington headed to the locker room on his own power.

“Here inside NRG Stadium, Baylor running back Bryson Washington was injured on that last drive,” sideline reporter Taylor Davis said. “We saw him run off on his own power. He jumped onto the medical table inside the tent, spent some time inside there with the crew. He came out, threw his gloves on the ground, draped a towel over his head and has been escorted to the locker room.”

Bryson Washington led Baylor in carries in the game at the time of his injury, logging five touches for 24 yards. Baylor trailed 14-0 at the time of his exit, though it would score quickly after the update provided by the broadcast crew, cutting the deficit to 14-7.

Still, it’ll be important to monitor Washington’s status going forward.

“Guys, the coaches told us the need to run the ball in this game,” Davis reported. “I’ll keep you updated when I know more.”

Bryson Washington had eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark rushing prior to the bowl game. He entered the game with 170 carries for 1,004 yards and 12 touchdowns on the season. Washington had also accounted for 22 catches for 217 yards and a touchdown.
