Baylor is dealing with an injury to starting quarterback Gerry Bohanon. Bohanon missed last week’s game with a hamstring injury, leaving Blake Shapen to start at quarterback. With the Big 12 Championship against Oklahoma State coming up on Saturday, Baylor head coach Dave Aranda has updated Bohanon’s status.

According to Sam Khan Jr. of The Athletic, Aranda said that Bohanon will participate in Monday’s practice.

“We’ll see where he’s at,” Aranda said via Khan.

Bohanon has completed 64.3 percent of his passes this season for 2,160 yards, 17 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also has 69 rushing attempts for 301 yards and nine touchdowns. Bohanon completed 13 of his 27 passes against Oklahoma State, Baylor’s Big 12 title game opponent, early in October. He had 173 yards and a rushing touchdown in Baylor’s 24-14 loss to the Cowboys.

Shapen played well against Texas Tech on Saturday, completing 20 of his 34 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 24 rushing yards. Shapen also completed 16 of his 21 passes for 137 yards along with 44 yards on the ground after Bohanon was injured in the prior game against Kansas State.

The Big 12 title game has huge implications

If Oklahoma State beats Baylor for the Big 12 Championship, the Cowboys will pick up its second top ten win in as many weeks. Not only can Baylor spoil the playoff hopes of Oklahoma State, but the Bears can make a strong case for themselves with a Big 12 title.

The top four of the College Football Playoff picture is likely to include Georgia, Michigan, Alabama, and Cincinnati on Tuesday night. But Oklahoma State and Baylor should be two of the top teams outside the top four. Georgia and Alabama face off in the SEC Championship on Saturday. If Georgia blows Alabama out, the Crimson Tide could very easily fall out of the playoff picture. Michigan faces Iowa for the Big Ten title, and playing against Iowa’s defense is always tough. Cincinnati also faces a tough Houston team for the American title.

While Baylor or Oklahoma State would need some help, there is a potential path to the playoff. If chaos ensues over championship weekend, the Big 12 winner is in a prime position to benefit with a rise into the top four when it is all said and done.
