Dave Aranda shares inspiration from 'Sqwirl' Williams after first half against Oklahoma
As Baylor entered halftime with a 24-21 lead over Oklahoma, coach Dave Aranda shared the inspiration they find in Craig Williams. Williams — known by his nickname of “Sqwirl” — had a monster first half against the Sooners. The fifth-year junior running back finished the first half with 12 carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

Aranda was stopped on the field after the first half and asked about the impact his defense has had on their last two games — recording eight interceptions in the last six quarters of play. Despite their impressive turnover stats, Aranda pointed to an overall lack of discipline that allowed Oklahoma to stay within three points despite throwing three interceptions.
“More discipline I think. Whether it’s gap assignments or it’s eyes in the back-end. It’s communication during no-huddle. There’s a fair amount that’s going wrong that we gotta get fixed,” said Aranda.
Aranda continued as the teams entered the locker rooms for the half that Williams’ energy and comeback from multiple injuries during his career is a major boost to the Bears.

“Energy, I think. Everyone knows Squirwl’s story and what he’s been through. And for him to continue to come back from whatever obstacle that meets him is inspiring. And I’m glad he’s with us.”
The Bears came into Saturday’s Big 12 showdown a game behind Kansas State for second place in the conference, tied with Texas and Oklahoma State at 3-2 in conference play. A win over the Sooners would keep Baylor right in the mix for the Big 12 championship.
