According to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, Ron Roberts is “out” as the Baylor defensive coordinator. Colt Barber of Sic’Em247 was the first to report the news.

Roberts had been with the Bears since head coach Dave Aranda took over the program before the 2020 season. He also served as the inside linebackers coach along with his coordinator duties. Being his first job at the Power Five level, Roberts will now be on the open market.

Baylor struggled defensively down the stretch, an unusual thing to say about an Aranda-led football team. Big 12 opponents ripped the Bears to shreds throughout the season, averaging just over 30 points per game.

Just a year prior, Baylor sported one of the top-scoring defenses in the country en route to a Big 12 Championship. Things regressed enough to where Aranda felt the need to make a change.

Prior to Baylor, Roberts was the defensive coordinator at Louisiana under now-Florida headman Billy Napier. He has also been a head coach in his lifetime, working with Delta State and Southeastern Louisiana at the Division II level.

In addition to Roberts, safeties coach and special teams coordinator Ronnie Wheat has also reportedly been let go. ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg first reported the news.

Baylor quarterback Kyron Drones enters NCAA transfer portal

Baylor quarterback Kyron Drones has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

On Wednesday afternoon, Drones took to Twitter to share his announcement with the college football world.

Drones has spent two seasons with the Bears, getting his first bit of action this season for head coach Dave Aranda. He appeared in five games this year, including three Big 12 matchups, throwing for 219 yards, a touchdown, and an interception on 23 attempts.

Drones played his senior year of high school football at Pearland (TX) Shadow Creek, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 260 overall recruit in the 2021 cycle, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
