Duke Blue Devils defensive back Placide Djungu-Sungu has committed to transfer to the Baylor Bears. He has one season of eligibility remaining.

Coming out of high school at Martin in Arlington, Texas, Placide Djungu-Sungu was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2021. He was the 1,034th-ranked recruit overall and the 88th-ranked defensive back in that recruiting cycle.

In 2021, Djungu-Sungu would play in two games as a freshman at Duke, taking a redshirt. Over the next three seasons, he’d see action in 25 games for the Blue Devils. That time would be split between time in Duke’s secondary, where his natural position is safety, and on special teams.

For his career, Djungu-Sungu has 18 total tackles. That includes nine solo tackles for his career.

Initially, Djungu-Sungu played for David Cutcliffe at Duke. After multiple coaching changes, he’s also spent time playing for Mike Elko and Manny Diaz, both of whom are considered among the best defensive minds in college coaching. Now, at Baylor, he’ll play for Dave Aranda, another excellent defensive head coach.

In 2024, Baylor had a bounce-back season after a frustrating 2023 campaign. Dave Aranda led Baylor to an 8-4 record overall in the regular season. The Bears also were 6-3 in Big 12 play, which was good for a fifth-place finish. They’d then go on to lose in the Texas Bowl.

Baylor has been relatively active in the Transfer Portal going into the 2025 season. The Bears have the 18th-ranked transfer class in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings. That’s a class with 17 transfers leaving and 20 transfers entering the program. Placide Djungu-Sungu is already included in that number.

The hope for Dave Aranda and Baylor is to be competitive in the Big 12 next season. They most recently won the Big 12 in 2021, Aranda’s second season running the program. Now, with the expanded Playoff, earning a win there would also earn the Bears a trip to the College Football Playoff. That run is going to start on August 29th with an interesting home game against the Auburn Tigers. Conference play begins on September 20th with a major matchup against the Arizona State Sun Devils.
