Baylor took a commanding lead into halftime against Kansas on Saturday, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Bears in the first half. Forward Jonathan Tchamwa-Tchatchoua had three fouls at the break, while Flo Thamba also had two.

That’s why Scott Drew told ESPN’s Holly Rowe he needed reinforcements — and he was prepared to go to the media table to find some.

“First, I think what we need to do is we need [Jay] Bilas,” Drew joked. “He’s got zero fouls, and all our bigs have got three. So we need Bilas to play center. I know he’s a pick-and-pop guy, but I’m fine with that.”

It was an impressive first half for Baylor, taking a 45-32 lead over Kansas into the locker room. The Bears got monster performances out of their guards, who had all 45 of their points. Keyonte George led the way with 15 points while Adam Flagler had 14, LJ Cryer had 13 and Jalen Bridges had the final three.

Drew said the selfless play of his four guards was a huge reason why Baylor was able to jump out in front and never look back through the first 20 minutes. Still, there’s always room to improve.

“Our guards made the extra passes,” Scott Drew said. “[They] did a great job. We’re driving it, they’re driving it. We’ve got to get to the free throw line. We’ve got great free throw shooters. I guess we’ve got to get our spots earlier. We’ll watch some film, see what we’re doing wrong.”

Baylor is looking to keep making noise in the Big 12 this season after an 0-3 start to conference play. The Bears took a 20-6 record, including a 9-4 mark in Big 12 action, into Saturday’s game and look primed for another run at the NCAA Tournament in March.
