Baylor turned a 25-point deficit into a tie game to force overtime and looked to be in the driver’s seat. But North Carolina managed to hold them off to come away with the 93-86 win — and upset the No. 1-seeded Bears.

After the game, Scott Drew spoke with CBS’ Allie LaForce about the game, and the emotions showed. He still couldn’t help but feel proud of his group for battling back in the second half, outscoring North Carolina 38-18 over the last 10:08 of regulation.

“Rudy Tomjanovich said it best: ‘Never underestimate the heart of a champion,'” Drew said. “When you’re down 25 and you come back and force overtime, I’m really proud of these guys and the heart [with] which they compete. You lay your head on the pillow at night knowing they gave their all. They always do.”

It was a bumpy road to the No. 1 seed for Baylor. The Bears dealt with multiple injuries throughout the season, and even had players leave and come back against North Carolina. Drew credited his team for battling through everything, as well as how the program’s values shined through.

“I think the perseverance that they’ve showed, the resilience all year,” Drew said. “But at Baylor, the great thing is we get to help mold men and it’s a spiritual growth, character formation, academic success. They’ve had one of the best GPAs in school history.

“Spiritually, they’ve been a great group, they’ve really grown. High-character individuals. So we didn’t win on the court, but we’ve won in life.”

UNC survives huge Baylor comeback, pulls off overtime upset in NCAA Tournament

For the first time in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, a No. 1 seed has been upset. That infamous honor belongs to Baylor, after the Bears suffered an upset loss against the North Carolina Tar Heels on Saturday. UNC dominated the first half, carrying a strong 42-29 lead into halftime over Baylor. The Tar Heels ultimately won the game in overtime, 93-86.

Baylor came on strong in the final minutes of the game, cutting UNC’s giant lead back to single digits, eventually tying the game with 15 seconds remaining.

The Tar Heels led by as many as 25 points with around ten minutes left in the game. But after Baylor went on a monumental run over the final minutes of the second half, the Bears were able to force overtime. UNC got a final shot at the buzzer in regulation, but it did not fall.

Baylor’s second half comeback began when UNC forward Brady Manek was ejected nearly midway through the second half with a controversial flagrant-2 foul. The loss was a big one for UNC, as Manek had 26 points, five rebounds, and two assists before his ejection. Armando Bacot later got into foul trouble, and guard Caleb Love also fouled out in the final minutes of the game. After two quick fouls in overtime, Dontrez Styles found himself with four fouls, as well.
